"Merry
Christmas"
To All
I, most sincerely, wish you all a
Christmas that is filled with joy and celebration with family. Above all, make it a Christmas that remembers
what we are truly celebrating.
Everywhere I have gone the past two
weeks, not once have I seen any signs in stores or decorations on streets, or anywhere,
that have said "Merry Christmas."
They all say things like "Happy
Holidays," or "Season Greetings," or "Best Wishes for the
Holidays." I have thought about
conducting a little survey and ask people, as they shop, if they know what we
are celebrating. It's a little late now,
but I am afraid that many do not really know that it was the date of the birth
Jesus are savior. That is sad.
There is a lot of talk right now about
how are culture has changed, referring to the violence by use of guns. I believe that our culture has, also, changed
in our feeling and treatment of each other.
We need to remember his teaching, "Do
unto others as you would have done unto you."

CONFUSION -
GUN GLOSSARY
I just read an article
entitled "Gun Glossary."
First, you should know that I don't know anything about guns. When I first read the article, I thought it
was really good. It gets into more
detail than I had ever seen. I thought
that it was one I should really include in this posting.
Then I read some of the
comments from people who, obviously, knew about guns. They pointed out so many misleading and
mistaken statements in the article, that even to me, I could see that the
article was doing nothing but adding more confusion to the subject of fire
arms, or guns if you wish to call them that.
There is little, if
anything, I can add to the discussion that has been taking place since the
latest terrible shooting in Newtown
Connecticut . I have noticed that the NRA has not been
saying anything to this point. I think
they know that something is going to have to be done and that it won't
interfere with hunting or target shooting.
Last week, Ed Schultz
on the Ed Show, MSNBC, said that he was a gun owner and had been all his
life. However, he sees that we are to
the point that something concrete has to be done about ownership and use of
guns.
Now Is The Time
In and
article by E. J. Dionne of the Washington Post, he points out that "For some months now, there have been rumblings from
the administration that Obama has been unhappy with his own policy passivity in
responding to earlier mass shootings and was prepared in his second term to
propose tough steps to deal with our national madness on firearms.
He spoke
in Newtown in
solidarity with the suffering, but pointed toward action. No, he said, we are not “doing enough to keep
our children, all of them, safe from harm.” He added: “We will have to change.”
And his
initial statement Friday pointed to his exasperation. “We have been through this too many times,” he
said, reciting our national litany of unspeakable events, and insisting that we
will “have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more
tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.”
And we
will have to avoid the paralysis induced by those who cast every mass shooting
as the work of one deranged individual and never ever the result of flawed
policies. We must beware of those who
invoke complexity not to further understanding but to encourage passivity and
resignation.
Yes,
every social problem and every act of violence have complicated roots. But we already know that it is far too easy to
obtain guns in the United
States and far too difficult to keep guns
out of the hands of those who should not have them. And we already know that weapons are available
that should not even be sold."
My sorrow and prayers
I extend to all of Newtown
and, of course, to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that these shooting will come to a
screeching-halt.

GOOD NEWS
FOR OBAMA
BAD NEWS FOR
REPUBLICANS
Shocking news: A new poll finds that
Mitch McConnell, who infamously said his top priority was to make Obama a
one-term president, has a dismal 37%
approval rating in his home state, making him "the least popular senator
in America ."1
Any senator with numbers this bad is
in serious trouble. And
it's incredibly important news for the fiscal showdown and other key issues
because it shows that the Republicans can't get away with just saying no to
everything—even in red states like Kentucky .
That's why this poll is already sending shockwaves through Washington . And to keep the momentum going, MoveOn is planning a no-nonsense TV ad
holding Sen. McConnell and other key Republicans accountable for their refusal
to work with Obama for a balanced solution to the budget.
Mitch McConnell has
long been the ring-leader of the anti-Obama obstructionists in Congress,
breaking every record in the book for filibusters.
But because Kentucky is such a red
state, it was assumed he was politically unbeatable. Turns out even Kentucky
wants Republicans to start working with Obama.
That's why this new poll is so
important. Seeing the mastermind of their entire political strategy this far
down in the polls is a serious wake-up call, forcing them to finally negotiate with Obama.

REMEMBER THE
CHILDREN
Robert Reich
NationofChange
/ Op-Ed
Published: Tuesday 18 December 2012
From Floyd:
Least we forget. The following article brings to the
forefront, some things we know, and some we don't know, but ALL we need to give
more thought and attention too.
Not only are we failing to protect our children from
deranged people wielding semi-automatic guns.
We’re not protecting them from poverty. The rate of child
poverty keeps rising – even faster than the rate of adult poverty. We now have
the highest rate of child poverty in the developed
world.
And we’re not protecting their health. Rates of child
diabetes and asthma continue to climb. America
has the third-worst rate of infant mortality among 30 industrialized nations
and the second-highest rate of teenage pregnancy, after Mexico .
If we go over the “fiscal cliff” without a budget deal,
several programs focused on the well-being of children will be axed —
education, child nutrition, school lunches, children’s health, Head Start. Even
if we avoid the cliff, any “grand bargain” to tame to deficit is likely to
jeopardize them.
The Urban
Institute projects the share of federal spending on children
(outlays and tax expenditures) will drop from 15 percent last year to 12
percent in 2022.
At the same time, states
and localities have been slashing preschool and after-school programs, child
care, family services, recreation, and mental-health services.
Why?Conservatives want to blame parents for not doing
their job. But this ignores politics.
The NRA, for example, is
one of the most powerful lobbies in America – so powerful, in fact,
that our leaders rarely have the courage even to utter the words gun control.
A few come forth after a massacre such as occurred in
Connecticut to suggest that maybe we could make it slightly more difficult for
the mentally ill to obtain assault weapons. But the gun lobby and gun
manufacturers routinely count on America ’s (and media’s) short
attention span to prevent even modest reform.
The AARP is also among the most powerful lobbies,
especially when it comes to preserving programs that benefit seniors.
We shouldn’t have to choose between our seniors and
children — I’d rather focus on jobs and growth rather deficit reduction, and
sooner cut corporate welfare and defense spending than anything else. But the
brute fact is America ’s
seniors have political clout that matters when spending is being cut, while
children don’t.
At the same time, big corporations and the wealthy know
how to get and keep tax cuts that are starving federal and state budgets of
revenues needed to finance what our children need. Corporations systematically
play off one state or city against another for tax concessions and subsidies to
stay or move elsewhere, further shrinking revenues available for education,
recreation, mental health, and family services.
Meanwhile, advertisers and marketers of junk foods and
violent video games have the political heft to ward off regulations designed to
protect children from their depredations. The result is an epidemic of
childhood diabetes, as well as video mayhem that may harm young minds.
Most parents can’t protect their children from all this.
They have all they can do to pay the bills. The median wage keeps falling
(adjusted for inflation), benefits are evaporating, job security has
disappeared, and even work hours are less predictable.
It seems as if every major interest has political clout –
except children. They can’t vote. They don’t make major campaign donations.
They can’t hire fleets of lobbyists.
Yet they’re America ’s future.
Their parents and grandparents care, of course, as do
many other private citizens. But we’re no match for the entrenched interests
that dominate American politics.
Whether it’s fighting for reasonable gun regulation,
child health and safety overall, or good schools and family services – we can’t
have a fair fight as long as special-interest money continues to poison our
politics.
