REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS
&
THOSE NOW SERVING
Today, November 11, 2011, is Veterans Day. It is a day, during which, we Honor the Veterans of all of America 's Wars and also Honor those who are serving in our Military now.
There are many ways to Honor these men and women. One way, as long as I can remember, is to face the east with your right hand over your heart at 11:00 a. m. for one minute. I think that way of showing our Honor, started after World Ware 1. We face the east because that was the direction where so many of our men were killed and where the veterans had served.
Of course, since that time Americans have served in wars on most corners of the globe. America has been involved in 30 wars and conflicts starting with the War of Independence 1775 - 1783 with 25,000 casualties.
Of all the wars, the Civil War was the most costly in terms of casualties. There were 623,026. The next two were World War 1, with 116,708 and World War 2, with 407,316. As of 6-6-11 Afghanistan had 1,610 casualties and Iraq had 4,459.
These figures do not include wounded or missing.
I haven't given you these figures to make you feel bad about these loss. These people were proud to serve their country and they have always performed the duties they were called on to do.
Personally, I proudly served in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War 2. I had a photographic background when I went in, so after boot camp I was sent to the Photographic Unit. I was never sent into combat, but I did everything they asked of me. I spent four years in the Corps. Semper Fi and once a Marine you are always a Marine.
I truly hope that sometime today, at 11:00 a.m. if possible, do something to Honor our Veterans and our present military. If you see a Veteran or a man or woman in uniform, thank them. They are there for our freedom and we owe them so very much.
GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU. Floyd
