Obama Signature on Monsanto Protection Act Ignites Massive Activism.

NOTE FROM FLOYD:

For the past two or three months, I have been reading about Monsanto and the activist uprising against their practices.  Up until now, I have decided not to get into the fray.  Up until now, I have been a very strong supporter of President Obama.  In this last election I gave more than I could really afford and, as you know, if you have been following my postings, they have been very much supportive of the President or rather very much negative GOP.

At any rate, recent actions of the President have brought me to the point that I am having second thoughts.  He has gone too far in agreeing to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.  He has not been standing up to the Republicans as strong as I think he could and should.

I thought that in his second term, and with the overwhelming win in November, he would govern in a completely different manner.  I thought he would stop his cave in and force the Republicans to do the caving.  On the contrary, they still have him running away from what the voters elected him to do.

NOW, he has signed into law an Act that seems to be, a sell out to big business and corporations.  I realize that this was an amendment to a Continuing Resolution to keep the country from shutting down, but as long as he keeps giving in to Republicans like this, they will keep doing it.  If he had not signed this Continuing Resolution and even if the country had shut down for a short time, it could have backfired on the Republicans and they would have caved in pretty quickly.  One time like that would change things altogether.

I have not been writing about the Big Banks that are to big to prosecute and Wall Street, but he has been very soft on that and his Attorney General is the one who has said he can't prosecute them.  I don't understand that at all.  I AM NOT TOTALLY GIVING UP ON THE PRESIDENT, BUT SO FAR, INTO HIS SECOND TERM, I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN HIS ACTIONS.

I have not heard his explanation as to why he signed this bill, but I suspect we will be hearing something from him about it.  Whether it is a cover up or makes sense, we'll just have to wait and see.

NOW THE LATEST ON

 TUESDAY MORNING APRIL 2.

The second article on this subject is really important.  It tells what happened, but in my mind, it is not an excuse.  If, these legislators would spend more time doing their job than taking recess, maybe these things wouldn't happen.  I, personally, think that in this case they would have been better off to let the country shutdown for a day or two and get the Republicans to take this Monsanto amendment out of the bill.  It would have shown exactly who was to blame and really would have showed that the Democrats were doing their job.  NOT SO NOW.

DON'T FORGET, THE SECOND ARTICLE ON THIS SUBJECT IS IMPORTANT.

While Monsanto executives may be rejoicing behind the closed doors of their corporate offices, they have also just stabbed themselves in the heart with the blatant and cocky decision to go through with the Monsanto Protection Act.  Obama’s social media profiles are being blown up with thousands of enraged activists and concerned citizens who are demanding answers.

Thanks to the alternative news covering every angle of the Protection Act and the absurd fact that Monsanto actually wrote the rider itself, people have now come to fully understand just how deep the corruption goes when it comes to Monsanto’s Big Food monopoly.  And it doesn’t exempt the President.

It’s a well known fact that the Obama family actually eats from the White House organic garden which was planted in 2009 and has full time staffers who maintain and harvest organic produce that comes from the garden.  Many high level politicians actually refuse to eat anything but organic, as they are fully aware of what’s in ‘conventional’, GMO-loaded items.  Yet, despite this knowledge, they are quite eager to push Monsanto’s GMOs and ruthless business model on the citizens of the United States.

And the people are fully aware of the betrayal.

Scanning just a few comments amid the thousands calling out Obama for his signature on the spending bill that contained the Monsanto Protection Act, we find seriously frustrated activists and voters who can’t believe what they are seeing.  Even many Obama campaigners who came to the realization that Obama didn’t represent what they thought he did.  One specifically mentions how Obama promised to label GMOs in 2007 upon taking the seat of the President.  A promise that never came to fruition. In fact, no real attempts were made at all.

Here are a few comments among the thousands that I found interesting on Obama’s wall:

·                          Darlene Taylor: Barack Obama – 2007: “We’ll let folks know if their food is genetically modified because Americans should know.”  2013: He signed the Monsanto Protection Act making GMO giants immune to the law.

Erica Ecker: Apparently part of protecting our children no longer includes what goes in them.  Thanks for signing the Monsanto Protection Act.

Keri Kline: I am an activist for President Obama, and I am outraged he has failed to listen to the ‘American people he represents.  President Obama knowingly signed the Monsanto Protection Act over the insistence of more than 250,000 Americans who signed an urgent letter asking that he use his executive authority to veto H.R. 933 and send it back to Congress to remove the Monsanto Protection Act from the bill.  Regretfully, President Obama failed to live up to his oath to protect the American people and our constitution.

Overall, the decision to go with such a major act of corruption has jump started a massive movement to hold politicians and corporations accountable for their betrayal of the U.S. public.  It’s a move that has blown up in the face of those who thought they could slip it through into law.

This is from another article, but certainly fits in at the end of the above article.  Floyd

Just as central and major commercial banks are attempting to control the economy, just as corporations and other large entities are attempting to control our politics and elected officials, just as large oil companies are attempting to control the debate on climate change and the environment in general, biotech and agriculture giants are attempting to control food production through patented, genetic manipulation, using dirty political clout to support it and a lack of judicial or legislative oversight to continue it.

It should be obvious to all by now that Obama is only concerned about the welfare of the wealthy connected.

He was the perfect Trojan horse.

It's the bankers and other big corporations (like Monsanto) behind the curtain that control Obama and his buddies. He, and much of our government is OWNED.

What we need to do is focus on who is REALLY in power, and solve that problem. THAT is what our discussion needs to be about.. It's not about the tired old Democrats vs. Republicans crap, because they are one in the same. We need to get to the core of it all - the people behind the curtain. We already know who they are, for the most part.

What we need is a "Rand Paul Senator" that is willing to stand up and filibuster on GMOs.

Or the public to demand that the Congressional Cafeteria and the White House are required to serve GMO food every day.

How many more actions of our White House and Congress do we need before we finally realize how corrupt they are with a few exceptions such as Bernie Sanders. Lets get rid of all Democrats and Republicans and start over with Independents and Third Party people!

Blow up that damn organic garden at the White House.  Force the Obamas - the entire family - to eat the same crap we are now forced to eat.

Dollars to donuts, he'll approve the Keystone Pipeline.

He's a bald-faced liar, plain and simple.  And to think, he was our best choice in the last 2 presidential elections.

Pity, WE, the PEOPLE - WE just don't count any more.  Our votes are worth nothing.

True, Obama was forced into signing this legislation or I wouldn't get my food stamps (SNAP) in April.  But, he could have refused and gone on national TV to blame the Republicans in the House of Representatives for sticking this into the continuing resolution.  He just will not stand up to the special interests, and he is afraid of the powerful GOP/Tea Party.  The guy has no strength of character.  How can he possibly marshal the masses against the monied interests without stirring up some anger?

NedLong

He is not afraid of the 'powerful GOP'; he IS the GOP.

How would you, James Richard Bailey, talk to an Obamapologist?  It is like talking to a meth head.

By the way, using food stamps as a bargaining chip to pass the Monsanto Protection Rider is classic Barack.  What a poker player.

Top Senator Apologizes About Monsanto

Anthony Gucciardi

Published: Tuesday 2 April 2013

Even if some of the Senators are just covering their rear ends, the fact is that we do have a voice and we are forcing those responsible for passing corrupt legislation accountable.

Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland has released a public statement apologizing to the public for the passing of the Monsanto Protection Act, stating that the legislation was buried deep within a government spending bill that was required to ‘prevent a government shutdown’.

Mikulski is the Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman, one who was ultimately responsible for passing the bill that contained the notorious Monsanto Protection Act — a legislative ‘rider’ that grants biotech juggernaut Monsanto immunity from federal courts when it comes to their GMO crops. Although ‘written’ by Senator Roy Blunt, who actually gave Monsanto the ability to write their own Monsanto Protection Act and has received over $60,000 from Monsanto, Mikulski has taken serious flak for the passing of the rider.

A rider that Monsanto thought they could slip through the Senate without much of a fight, only to find that the alternative news has made it a mainstream media topic by force (despite GMO lovers saying that it never even happened).

Massive Activism Leads to Apologies

In a release from Senator Mikulski’s office, Mikulski states that she actually sides with frustrated activists who are against the Monsanto Protection Act and had no other choice but to pass the spending bill to prevent ‘government shutdown’. And she’s not the only one. Senator Tester reportedly told Politico that the rider serves no one but major biotech corporations, and many others have begun to speak out following the outcry.

The Mikulski office press release written by a staffer and summarizing the stance of Mikulski, reads:

“She didn’t put the language in the bill and doesn’t support it either.  As Chairwoman of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Mikulski’s first responsibility was to prevent a government shutdown. That meant she had to compromise on many of her own priorities to get a bill through the Senate that the House would pass. She will continue to fight for a regular and timely Appropriations process and other valuable priorities, including food safety.”

Now the question is whether or not she is being sincere or simply performing PR damage control following the fact that the public is finding out about the severity if the issue.  Instead of arguing the reality behind the politics of the bill and whether or not it would lead to ‘government shutdown’ as she says, let’s look at her fruits regarding the GMO issue. First of all, my question is why did she not say anything before the issue got super hot in the media? Why did she not warn her citizens and the US at large about what was happening before she was a target?

Admittedly, and as her release states, she has supported the labeling of genetically modified fish — something that the FDA should do anyway without political pressure (but they won’t) through legislation. But what about the fight against Monsanto’s immunity? The reality is that multiple Senators are now being forced to answer for their actions thanks to serious outrage from the public and readers like you that genuinely just want to eat real food and prevent destructive corporations like Monsanto from receiving immunity against the law.

Even if some of the Senators are just covering their rear ends, the fact is that we do have a voice and we are forcing those responsible for passing corrupt legislation accountable.

ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH

AYN RAND

OR

HAVE YOU EVEN HEARD OF HER?

FROM FLOYD:

Back in posting OBOF 22 & 23 I first wrote to you about Ayn Rand.  Since then a great deal more has happened that is very upsetting and dangerous.  Now you may well think that I am over exaggerating, but folks I am not.  There is definitely a subversive plan to, in the next few years, to overthrow our Democracy.  In the postings that I referred to above there is a good presentation about Ayn Rand from Dr. Allen Smith.  It is so informative and reliable that I am listing it again below.

But first, the latest development that has really shocked me.  In addition to this article there is an update from Dr. Smith that will really open your eyes.

THERE WILL BE A NUMBER OF HIGH RANKING PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY AND PARTICULARLY LEGISLATORS, WHO WILL SAY THAT THIS IS JUST NONSENSE AND DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THIS.  FOLKS, THIS IS EXACTLY THE WAY HITLER TOOK OVER GERMANY, BY STARTING WITH THE TEACHINGS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND MORE IMPORTANTLY IN UNIVERSITIES.  THIS HAS TO BE STOPPED.  PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS AND GIVE IT, NOT ONLY YOUR SERIOUS THOUGHT, BUT TALK TO OTHERS ABOUT IT.  OUR DEMOCRACY IS IN DANGER.

A Cinderella Story? How The Koch Brothers Use Florida Gulf Coast University To Promote Their Agenda

It’s a great story: the virtually unknown, 15th seeded Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), has made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. But there’s something you might not know about FGCU: its economics department is, as a consequence of grants from Randian businessman John Allison and the Charles G. Koch Foundation, a haven for Ayn-Rand Style thinking:

At Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, every student who majors in economics and finance gets a copy of Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas ShruggedFGCU now has a core group of a half dozen economists whose research supports the ideas of free-market capitalism, still an unpopular subject in most faculty lounges. They teach this material to more than 250 economics and finance students (one class is titled “The Moral Foundations of Capitalism”), organize lectures by leading thinkers, publish their research in well-respected journals and hold influential positions in groups that promote free markets.

The ideological transformation of FGCU economics began in 2009, when Allison, a famous devotee of Ayn Rand’s who was then the president of banking giant BB&T, donated $600,000 to FGCU to create the endowed “BB&T Distinguished Professor of Free Enterprise.” Allison now runs the libertarian Cato Institute, a position he gained with the support of Charles and David Koch after some controversy.

The Kochs also supported Allison’s efforts at FGCU, a largely local school with about 11,000 undergradutes. A ThinkProgress review of Charles G. Koch Foundation donations from 2008-2011 found $87,000 in donations to Florida Gulf Coast University. According to an internal BB&T professorship report, the Koch money “provide[s] operational seed funding for the yearly activities and the local BB&T Charitable Foundation sponsors our premier annual event — The BB&T Free Enterprise Lecture Series.” The internal report also included metrics on the program’s operations such as “Atlas Shrugged Distribution — Number of students reached: approximately 120.”

Strange as it may seem that private ideological organizations can support academic departments, it’s not uncommon. A massive Koch donation to Florida State University’s economics program generated significant controversy in 2011 when it came to light that the donation was accompanied by de facto Koch control over some hiring decisions and the ability to review the scholarship generated.  As of February 2013, 129 colleges and universities around the country were receiving Koch Family Foundations support.

Whether or not you think these sorts of donations are threats to academic freedom, they do lay bare the somewhat surprising disadvantage progressives face when it comes to getting funding for work on their intellectual traditions.  In addition to the Koch direct-donations, organizations like the conservative Intercollegiate Studies Institute and libertarian Institute for Humane Studies help promote their ideas on campus and connect their students with likeminded colleagues and employers.  Progressives conspicuously lack any equivalent organizations that connect students with a broader intellectual network, providing a potentially interesting explanation for why conservative ideas seem to have a direct pipeline to Washington while progressive alternatives stay at the margins of the debate.

Note from Floyd:

It just dawned on me that it has been some time since I have told you who Dr. Smith is and there may be some of you new ones that don't know.  I could write pages about him, but I will just touch on the main points.

I first got to know Allen Smith Ph.D., about six or seven years ago.  Dr. Smith is an Economist and taught Economics for 30 years at Southern Illinois University.  He has written seven books, one of which is used in many High Schools all across the country.  He is a tremendous man and has, for the past twelve years been a strong champion of Social Security.  I have provided you many of his writings in the past.  He only deals in facts.  What he says you can take to the bank as that is the way it is.

Following from Dr. Smith:

I have recently discovered a new avenue to research that helps explain the thinking of the crazy extreme conservatives?  Do you know who Ayn Rand was?  She was born and raised in Russia before coming to the United States when she was 21 years old.  She founded a philosophy and movement called Objectivism.  That philosophy argues that man's greatest purpose in life is to achieve happiness for himself.  She denounces the moral principle of altruism and said that nations must abandonee it if they are to survive.  She argues that we are not our brothers' keepers and opposes anything that is designed.  She is an avowed atheist who turns Judeo-Christian values upside down.

I will paste below some of my other writing about her.

The greatest threat to Social Security is the fact that there is a strong, well-organized movement to get rid of Social Security.  These Social Security haters are determined to destroy Social Security, just as they would kill a poisonous snake.  Most of them are disciples, of Ayn Rand, whose novels Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, along with her nonfiction book, The Virtue of Selfishness, have garnered a very large following, including Paul Ryan, who almost came within a heartbeat of becoming President of the United States.

Alan Greenspan, who was an associate of Ayn Rand for 20 years, first brought the movement to Washington when a fellow Rand associate, Martin Anderson, recommended Greenspan to Nixon for the position of Economic Advisor to the President.  Given their closeness, it is not surprising that Greenspan had Ayn Rand standing beside him during his swearing in ceremony at the White House.

Greenspan later chaired The National Commission on Social Security Reform where he helped lay the foundation for the great Social Security theft.  Still later, Greenspan served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve System for more than 18 years.  Among other mistakes, during his tenure at the Fed, Greenspan is widely blamed for contributing to the Financial Meltdown of 2008 by keeping interest rates too low for too long and allowing the housing bubble to grow.

During his years with Ayn Rand, Greenspan wrote articles for her periodical, The Objectivist.  He wrote the following words in an article in July 1966:

"The welfare state is nothing more than a mechanism by which governments confiscate the wealth of productive members of society to support a wide variety of welfare schemes."

Other prominent people who have expressed admiration for Ayan Rand and her ideas include: Ronald Reagan, John Boehner, Senator Ron Johnson, Ron Paul, Senator Rand Paul, Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Newt Gingrich, Eric Cantor, Mitch McConnell, and many others.

Ayn Rand died in 1982, but the movement based on her philosophy is even stronger today than when she was still alive, and it is picking up steam.  Ayn Rand’s 1964 book entitled, The Virtue of Selfishness, sold 400,000 copies during the first four months after publication.  Half a century later, in 2013, it is still selling at a hefty pace.  In 2011, Atlas Shrugged sold 445,000 copies, the second strongest sales year in the novel’s 54-year history.

Floyd, the above examples should give you an idea of the philosophy currently being expounded by right-wing conservatives.  I recently read a new biography about Ayn Rand, and I am currently reading Rand's book, The Virtue of Selfishness.  Her ideas are shocking.  Even more shocking is the fact that people like Alan Greenspan, Paul Ryan, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, Justice Clarence Thomas and many others follow her ideas.

DR.  ALLEN  SMITH'S  LATEST

&

MOST  ENLIGHTENING  THOUGHTS.

Hi Floyd,

Thanks for sending the article.  I wasn't aware of the connection between Ayn Rand and FGCU specifically, but I knew that there was a connection at some other public universities.  I am somewhat familiar with FGCU, and I have been on the campus.  It is a relatively new university, and I can see how they would have been receptive to large donations.  I did a Google search on (FGCU  Ayn Rand), and there are a lot of articles on the connection.  Here is a link to one of them

I am becoming very intrigued with the connection between Ayn Rand and the conservative movement in America.  I first read the biography, Goddess of the Market: Ayn Rand and the American Right , by Jennifer Burns, a history professor at Stanford University. This book is very comprehensive and gives a detailed report of Rand's life, her books, and her philosophy.  I was so intrigued that I decided to read one of Rand's own books.  I read The Virtue of Selfishness, and I was shocked by what I read.   I then wrote an op-ed article entitled, The Mystery Woman Behind the Conservatime Movement in America  I submitted the op-ed exclusively to the Orlando Sentinel, and they have emailed me that they have decided to publish it, but I don't know when.

I am thinking about writing a book about  the connection between Ayn Rand's philosophy and the Republican Party.   I believe that this movement is a real threat to the future of America Did you know that there are official organizations dedicated to the promotion of Ayn Rands philosophy, which have a lot of money behind them?  The Ayn Rand Institute http://www.aynrand.org/site/PageServer?pagename=index  is located in  Irvine, CA.  The Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights

is located in Washington D.C.  If you look at these websites, you will see how hard they are pushing their ideology.  They give high school teachers free copies of Atlas Shrugged,  and do a lot of promotion to colleges and universities.  In short, they have a huge propaganda machine whic h is heavily financed.
